As if Heathrow wasn’t bad enough

on a good day! The opening of Terminal 5 yesterday has caused chaos.

British Airways: Heathrow chaos not our ‘finest hour’

British Airways officials say flight cancellations may extend into Saturday as delays and baggage problems continued to plague Heathrow Airport’s Terminal Five.

Officials hope to operate 80 percent of scheduled Terminal 5 flights Friday, but cancellations include BA flights to Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.
British Airways, the only airline operating from the new $8.6 billion terminal, canceled 20 percent of its flights from the site on Friday, a spokesman said, and predicted possible delays for the remaining 80 percent.

Caused chaos? Considering what the place was already like, how could they tell?

Between the fact that Heathrow was home to my worst airport experience ever (you’d think three hours would be enough time to transfer between flights, but we just barely made it) and the fact that the new Terminal 5 is designed to be traveler-hostile (with only 700 seats in its public waiting areas, it’s designed to funnel travelers into seats at restaurants and cafes, or leave them wandering in shopping arcades), Heathrow is to be avoided at all costs.

Of course, now that the dollar is degenerating into play money, it’s not like I’ll be doing much international travelling anytime soon …

Heathrow has always been a smooth experience for me. Then they opened Terminal 5 and it all went to hell.

Tuesday was the first time an airline has ever lost my luggage (and I fly a lot).

I nearly missed my connecting flight because of the chaos.
