Travel Tuesday – Ever notice

how hard is it to plan a trip home?

I did when I started to plan one last year for this year (which has been postponed a year).

Sure, it might be easy for those of you who have only lived in one place, but for those of us who have moved around, it’s not. I have family/friends that I want to see in various parts of the country, however there’s something else I want to do.

Have fun.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I do have fun with my family and friends, but I want to do other things too – after all, it is vacation.

Here’s the list I made last year:

• 4th of July week in Philadelphia;
• Shopping – laptop, other electronics (if the exchange rate remains good), clothes and books;
• Eating – Taco Bell, cheesesteak, Casey’s, Outback;
• MLS game: NYC or DC (since the FC Reál Chester Who-Gives-A-Shits won’t begin playing until 2010 (theoretically));
• A baseball stadium tour: Philly, DC, both NYCs, Boston, Baltimore;
• Broadway;
• TV Show in NYC;
• I also hope to have a family bbq at a certain location that is way too far from civilisation for me, but is the most convenient for my NE family;
• Have Meet-Ups with two or three different groups of internet people from yesteryear.

Here’s what it’s starting to evolve into:

• 4th of July in Philadelphia;
• Shopping – electronics (if the exchange rate gets better), clothes and books;
• Eating – Taco Bell, cheesesteak, Casey’s, Outback;
• MLS game: the FC Reál Chester Who-Gives-A-Shits;
• Baseball games;
• A show on Broadway;
• TV Show in NYC;
• A family bbq at a certain location that is way too far from civilisation for me, but is the most convenient for my NE family;
• Have Meet-Ups with a group of internet people from yesteryear;
• Disneyworld and other parks in FL?;
• Kennedy Space Center tour?;
• Visit Los Angeles and San Francisco again?;
• See how much Vega$ has changed since 1995?;
• etc

It’ll see interesting to see how the list continues to evolve.

How do YOU plan a trip ‘home’ (wherever that may be) and mix family, friends and fun?

It’s extremely painful, but looks a bit like yours with a more family (ie kid activity) orientation and stays East Coast. And I have to buy 4 tickets.

Yours sounds fun.

For us, having a kid and a business means doing less more often. We see my parents in Minnesota at least once a year, but except for business meetings we haven’t been anywhere else.

We are making an exception this year, though… we decided on the spur of the moment to go to Minnesota for a week in July, and are stopping over in NY for the weekend on the way back.

It also helps that there’s only one baseball team I care to see… :-)
