Tomorrow I had planned on taking a bus up to the lower part of the mainland (about 90 minutes), but have changed my mind due to a lack of inexpensive hotels there. The only ones I have been able to find (both before I left Europe and also this morning) have been at least triple the price of where I currently am, and I’d rather use the money for other things.
Having said that, I will be changing hotels tomorrow. The entire three weeks I was in Vietnam, I got used to having bathroom attached to my room instead of down the hall and also the luxury of a window in my room. So, this morning I made a few inquiries at hotels near mine and found a reasonably priced one just down the road (I’m staying in a prime area) that has both the things mine is lacking.
Other things I’ll be doing: a water trip or two. Unfortunately. I have done all the ones that have sea canoeing in the last few years. So, this year I am considering white water rafting instead for one trip and possibly a 2nd trip that includes a bamboo raft trip, a jungle trek, swimming in water at the end of a waterfall, etc. It depends on the prices.
Brochures for water trips are everywhere and have prices in them, but they aren’t set. As with many prices in Asia, it is expected to negotiate the prices of excursions down – something I hate doing.
Since I will be doing a water trip or two, it makes no sense to rent a motorbike for a week like I did last year. Of course, that depends on the price too. I walked by a place earlier today that rented one kind for 150 THB. I might inquire as to whether they discount the price for a weekly rental and do the math tomorrow morning.
What else? I ordered new glasses this morning and think I got a good deal. After going to four opticians, I decided on a full eye exam, bendy frames and photochromic lenses (darken in sunlight) for €80. Unlike in Germany, I didn’t have to wait three months for an exam (it was done on the spot) and my glasses will be ready in two days. As with every year, I’ll be stocking up on contact lenses before I return home. Six pair for €20 is still a good deal (at least to me). Despite the fact that I wear my glasses every day at work, contacts and sun glasses are how I roll on holiday (other than on airplanes) from the time I leave my hotel in the morning until just before I go to bed.
Finally, after using it quite a bit this trip (drafts can even be created offline – like this one is being done), I can highly recommend the WordPress App for iPhones and Ipod Touches.
