Travel Tuesday: An Update

on Prepaid SIM Cards in the USA

It couldn’t be simpler.

As long as you have an unlocked tri or quad-band phone, just visit the closest T-Mobile shop (in the USA) and buy a prepaid SIM card for $10 (if I recall correctly, it comes with $3 credit), pop it in your phone and voilĂ ! It works (in most regions). You can even register on the T-Mobile USA website and reload your card online (just like in Germany).

Hope this helps.

This is great advice. There was some concern whether our Vodafone phones were unlocked and set up for use with other service providers, but as it turned out, at least Sarah’s phone was. But the first time you try this with a new phone, you should check with your current (original) service provider whether the device is SIM-locked or not. T-Mobile worked fine for us; AT&T is the other GSM operator in the US and they might have competitive no-contract deals too.
