Stereotypes of Americans
11 March, 2001

I’m amazed at the stereotypes that I find out about Americans and/or the USA. This page will list them as I hear them. New ones will be added to the top of the list.

Americans are rich. – I wish!

Americans have no interest in the world outside of the USA. – I agree that this is true of some Americans, but it is probably also true for some people in every country.

Americans want the world to be exactly like the USA. – This is a scary thought.

Most Americans are cremated. – This shocked me. It is not true! It was explained to me that in graveyards in the USA, we usually only have a small headstone, as the coffins are completely buried. In other countries, such as Poland, there is a headstone and the coffin is sealed in a concrete box in the ground that sticks up about 3 or 4 inches out of the ground.

You can have a good career quickly in the USA. – This is far from true.

Americans have to work 60 – 70 hours per week. – Probably true for some people, but not a majority.

All white Americans are racists. This is soooo not true.

Americans are very patriotic. – True, however I’ve found that most people who like their country are.

Talking about religion with Americans is taboo. – I wouldn’t say that it is taboo, however usually you only talk about it with family and close friends/co-workers.
